Many people assume that when they die, everything is passed to their spouse or partner - but this is not always the case. By writing a Will you can have the peace of mind of knowing that your family and friends will be protected.

Making a Will is also a good opportunity to leave a lasting legacy and remember causes that have been important to you throughout your life.

Why do I need to think about with updating my Will?

It is important to keep your Will up to date. It is a good idea to review your Will if your circumstances change - for example getting married or having children. Before you update your Will, think about:

the main things you own - like a house, shares, endowments, savings or life insurance policies - and roughly what they are worth

who you would like to include - after you have looked after your loved ones, we do hope you’ll consider leaving a gift to Julia’s House in your Will

who your executor(s) will be

what kinds of gifts you want to leave the people and charities you care about – items like a house or valuables (called ‘specific’ gifts), or money (which includes both ‘pecuniary’ and ‘residuary’ gifts)

How will my money be used?

When you leave a gift in your Will to Julia’s House, we promise:

We promise to use your gift wisely and effectively always be there to support local children and families across Dorset and Wiltshire. 1 in 4 children in our care are supported by gifts in Wills.

We will respect your privacy You don’t have to tell us of your decision, although, if you do, we would welcome the opportunity to thank you and tell you about the difference your gift could make.
Family comes first We understand how important it is that your family and friends are looked after first – but even a small percentage of what’s left over could make a huge difference to the families we care for.
You can change your mind at any time It’s your decision, and we will always respect your right to change your mind at any time about leaving us a gift. You don’t even need to tell us if you change your mind.
We won’t pressure you into making a decision We’re here to answer any questions you may have, but will never try to pressure you into making a decision.
We will be open and honest with you at all times We will answer all your questions fully, openly and honestly. If you wish, we can arrange for you to visit our hospice, so that you can see at first-hand what a difference your gift could make.

How do I change or add to an existing Will?

If you want to make a change or an addition to an existing Will, ask your solicitor. It is very important to use a solicitor to make sure you aren’t inadvertently upsetting any other arrangements in your Will. Or you can simply rewrite your Will for free using our Free Wills service.

Face to face Will writing service

If you or your partner are 50 or over, you can write or update your Will with one of our participating solicitors throughout Dorset. We are currently working hard to recruit new solicitors onto our Free Wills Scheme in Wiltshire, but what may be of interest is our online Will writing provider, Octopus Legacy, who provide an online, telephone and in person service. There’s no obligation to leave a gift to Julia’s House in your Will if you use our Free Wills service, but we hope you may consider it once you have taken care of your loved ones. A gift of just 1% from your Will can make 100% difference to overwhelmed parents going through dark times.

How does the face to face service work?

Choose one of our participating solicitors: view our solicitor participation list
Contact the firm of your choice, and explain that you want to make an appointment under the Julia’s House Free Wills Service.
After you’ve completed and signed your Will, the solicitor will ask you to fill in a simple form that helps us to measure how well the service is working.
