When Charmaine and Joe Watkinson pictured their wedding day, they didn’t expect that it would be their son Alfie who would steal the show!  Alfie, who has complex medical needs, became the star of the ceremony, all thanks to the incredible support from Julia’s House nurses, Elaine and Emily.

From the moment the wedding day began, Elaine and Emily were there, making sure Alfie was comfortable, happy, and right at the heart of this special celebration. Their dedicated care meant Charmaine and Joe could truly relax and soak up every moment with their family and friends, knowing Alfie was having the best time too.

And then came the moment that had everyone in stitches! During a quiet moment in the ceremony, seven-year-old Alfie was suddenly overcome with a fit of the giggles, and he just couldn’t stop. His laughter was infectious, rippling through the guests and filling the room with joy. Dressed in a suit to match his dad’s, Alfie was pushed down the aisle by his proud big sister Tia, with a sign on his wheelchair that read: “Daddy, it’s time to give Mummy our last name.”

“It was such a happy, love-filled day that we’ll never forget,” said Alfie’s mum, Charmaine. “And it meant the world to have Elaine and Emily there. Alfie absolutely adores them, and they understand him in ways even our closest family couldn’t. Their presence made the day what it was—it simply wouldn’t have been the same without them.”

From getting Alfie dressed to keeping him entertained, fed, and comfortable, Elaine and Emily provided 2-to-1 care throughout the day, right up until the wedding breakfast and closing speeches. Without them, Charmaine and Joe would have been caring for Alfie themselves, but instead, they were able to enjoy every moment with their guests, knowing Alfie was in the best hands.

Julia’s House has been a lifeline for the Watkinson family for over seven years, offering regular respite care at home and at the hospice, emotional support, play sessions, and complementary therapies. As Charmaine puts it: “Julia’s House aren’t just there for special occasions. They’ve become our safe space—the people we can always rely on and trust completely with Alfie. They understand him, they understand us, and they make such a difference to our lives. We honestly don’t know what we’d do without them.”

Elaine, one of Alfie’s nurses, shared: “Alfie is cheeky, full of life, and we’ve built a bond over the years. Being part of his family’s special day was an absolute honour—it’s why we do what we do.”
